Are you planning a trip to Laos soon and using an e-cigarette? Before packing your bags, it is essential to understand the local regulations. Laos enforces much stricter rules than most neighboring countries, and e-cigarettes, whether they contain nicotine or not, are completely banned.

Whether you are an occasional or regular vaper, transiting through Thailand or arriving directly in Laos, this article will help you avoid heavy fines, confiscation, or any inconvenience that could disrupt your trip.

Here is everything you absolutely need to know before departure.

E-cigarettes are banned in Laos

In 2021, Laos introduced new amendments fully banning e-cigarettes, whether they contain nicotine or not. This means:

  • Vaping is illegal everywhere in the country

  • Any e-cigarette will be immediately confiscated

  • You risk a minimum fine of 1,000,000 LAK (around €45)

  • A prison sentence of up to 4 months is also possible

For a long time, this ban was applied with some flexibility, but controls have been significantly strengthened since 2023, particularly:

  • In the streets

  • In train stations

  • Around Laos–China railway stations

  • At airports

  • At land border crossings

During security checks, your luggage will be scanned, and if an e-cigarette is detected, it will be confiscated without discussion.

Also beware in Thailand: total ban since 2014

If you are transiting through Thailand (arrival or departure), be aware that the law is even stricter. Since 2014, e-cigarettes have been banned, with severe penalties:

  • Immediate confiscation

  • Very high fines (up to 100,000 Baht, around €2,800)

  • Possible detention

A commonly cited case: a French woman had her device confiscated in 2019 and received a 40,000 Baht fine (€1,130) simply for vaping. After refusing to pay, she faced a potential prison sentence of 1 to 10 years. Today, Thai authorities still strictly enforce the law, and checks are frequent.

Laos: a leading country in tobacco control

Laos is among around 30 countries worldwide that fully ban e-cigarettes. Its efforts have been recognized by the World Health Organization: in November 2023, the Lao National Assembly received a World No Tobacco Day Award. This recognition highlights the country’s strict policy aimed at protecting the population, especially young people, from nicotine exposure.

Our advice to avoid any issues during your trip

To ensure your trip goes smoothly, we strongly recommend leaving your e-cigarette at home, whether you are arriving in Laos:

  • By air

  • By land

  • Or via Thailand

This will help you avoid confiscation and any legal risk. Instead, you may consider:

  • Nicotine patches

  • Nicotine gum

  • Consulting a smoking cessation specialist before departure

These alternatives will allow you to travel with peace of mind.
