Ecotourism in Laos

Ecotourism in Laos: ORLA Tours, a Committed Partner for Responsible Travel

Ecotourism, what does it really mean?

Ecotourism is much more than a trendy buzzword. It is a form of responsible travel that respects both the environment and local communities, along with their culture. At ORLA Tours, these values are not just intentions :  they are at the heart of every itinerary we design, and have been since our creation.

Our mission? To offer meaningful journeys that contribute to environmental preservation, respect for local populations, and the sustainable development of Laos.

Born in the 1970s, the concept of “ecotourism” emerged from a growing collective awareness of the negative impacts of mass tourism and consumer-driven societies. This new approach to travel was conceived as a response to today’s environmental, social, and economic challenges.

Ecotourism is built upon four fundamental pillars:

  • Environmental: protection of ecosystems, reduction of carbon footprint, preservation of wildlife and natural habitats.

  • Economic: support for local economies and fair compensation for local stakeholders.

  • Socio-cultural: promotion of local cultures and respect for communities.

  • Ethical: transparency, respect for human rights, and fairness in exchanges.

Fair Compensation for Our Local Partners

You may find that our tours are priced higher than other offers. Why? Because we have chosen to prioritize fair and sustainable partnerships with our local collaborators. Working hand in hand with our guides, drivers, restaurateurs, hoteliers, and host families, all of whom are fully committed to making your stay a success, we believe it is essential that they are fairly compensated for the quality of their work.

Refusing to drive prices down also means refusing exploitation, while preserving the quality and authenticity of each itinerary. These commitments are what ensure our travelers enjoy genuine, well-organized, and respectful experiences for everyone involved.

Ethics at the Heart of Our Itineraries

At ORLA Tours, cultural immersion goes far beyond a simple visit: it is an authentic human encounter. In each of our programs, we offer you the opportunity to discover the daily life of Laos’ ethnic communities through respectful and meaningful experiences.

Among these highlights, an overnight stay with a local family remains a must, providing a unique immersion into local life. For several years, we have collaborated with various villages and ethnic communities based on clear agreements ensuring that their culture is neither altered nor exploited for tourism purposes, as can sometimes happen elsewhere in Asia.

These long-term partnerships support local economic development while preserving ancestral values and traditions. During your visit, you will discover traditional craftsmanship:  weaving, basketry, pottery...and perhaps have the pleasure of bringing home handmade souvenirs rich in meaning.

ORLA Tours Certified Travelife Partner: International Recognition of Our Sustainable Commitment

In January 2024, ORLA Tours reached an important milestone by obtaining the Travelife Partner certification, an internationally recognized label for tourism companies committed to sustainable, ethical, and responsible practices.

This certification rewards our daily efforts to design journeys that respect the environment, honor local cultures, and benefit communities across Laos.

Laos in the Spotlight at ITB Berlin 2024

We had the immense honor of representing Laos at the prestigious international travel trade show ITB Berlin in March 2024. Invited to take the stage, we showcased the natural and cultural richness of our country while sharing the eco-responsible values that guide our work.

During our presentation, we highlighted:

  • Our direct collaboration with rural communities

  • Our support for fair tourism initiatives

  • Our commitment to minimizing the environmental impact of each itinerary

  • Our vision of tourism that benefits both travelers and local residents

Sustainability at the Core of Our DNA

Since our creation, we have believed in meaningful travel. This recognition from Travelife confirms our concrete commitment to:

  • A rigorous selection of responsible local partners

  • Itineraries designed to limit carbon emissions

  • Raising travelers’ awareness of local culture and biodiversity preservation

We will continue to improve our practices with the goal of achieving the next level of certification: Travelife Certified.

Our Association: Enfants du Laos

While responsible tourism can generate economic benefits for certain remote communities, many villages still face severe hardship. At ORLA Tours, we wanted to go further in our commitment to impactful ecotourism by providing direct and concrete support to local populations.

With this vision in mind, we created and sponsor the association “Enfants du Laos.” Through your journeys with us, we contribute to improving access to education in rural areas, fighting against school dropout, and supporting children so they can choose, if they wish, a future beyond working in the fields or rice paddies.

We regularly organize donation campaigns (school supplies, clothing, hygiene products, books, toys, etc.) for the most underprivileged families. And because we firmly reject any form of child exploitation or mendicancy, we have implemented a strict donation protocol that fully respects children and their dignity.

Ready for a Responsible Adventure?

Traveling with ORLA Tours means choosing an authentic, human, and respectful experience, one that lives in harmony with the people and cultures of Southeast Asia. Whether in Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, or Vietnam, we stand for a vision of travel built on sharing, meaningful exchange, and respect for local traditions.

If this approach resonates with you, don’t hesitate to contact our team. One of our travel designers will be delighted to create a tailor-made itinerary that reflects both your wishes and your values.

For our immersion journeys in the heart of Laos, ORLA Tours welcomes only small groups of 2 to 8 travelers. This limit ensures that visits to villages remain discreet and respectful, without disrupting daily life for local residents.
