When speaking about 19th-century Laos, two names inevitably emerge: Henri Mouhot and Auguste Pavie.
The first was a naturalist and adventurer. The second, a diplomat, explorer, and remarkable expert on the peoples of Laos. Both traveled across these lands at a time when the country remained largely unknown to Europeans. Their journals describe a Laos that was mysterious, wild, captivating, and deeply human.
As we read their travel accounts, one question kept coming back : How can we bring the spirit of these explorations back to life today? Not by recreating their expeditions exactly as they were, but by allowing modern travelers to experience that rare feeling of discovering a destination that remains largely preserved.
